WiTricity to Present with Honda R&D Americas at the 2018 SAE World Congress Experience

Companies will showcase feasibility study of bi-directional wireless charging for vehicle-to-grid

Detroit April 11, 2018WiTricity, the industry pioneer in wireless power transfer over distance, and Honda R&D Americas, the US based research and development arm of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., will present a jointly authored paper to address the use of wireless power transfer for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications. The paper will be presented at the Vehicle Electrification Strategies for Sustainability track of the WCX™18: Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress Experience. Kosuke Tachikawa of Honda R&D Americas will present the paper on April 11 at 2 p.m. ET in room 213A. Dr. Morris Kesler and Dr. Oguz Atasoy from WiTricity are co-authors of this study.

About the session:

Electric vehicles are gaining mainstream momentum; in fact, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, EVs are on track to reach 54 percent of new car sales by 2040. Simultaneously, renewable sources of energy like wind and solar power have been playing an increasing role on the nation’s electricity grid. However, it is difficult to maintain a balance between renewable energy availability and the peak energy demand placed on the grid. Distributed energy storage, in the form of parked electric vehicles that are connected to the grid and capable of bi-directional energy flow, is seen to have excellent potential for stabilizing the balance between supply and demand on the power grid. V2G is the operating mode in which the parked vehicle is able to transfer energy back into the grid.

Electrified vehicles are now being designed and introduced to the market with wireless charging capability, which enables the vehicle to be parked above a charging pad and to charge automatically, with no charging cables or driver intervention. WiTricity and Honda R&D Americas are jointly exploring the use of such wireless charging systems to also enable V2G operation. When EVs are enabled with wireless charging, connecting to the grid for V2G becomes automatic and seamless, and can facilitate the large-scale introduction of V2G technology into the market. In this presentation, WiTricity and Honda will discuss a bi-directional wireless charging system for V2G applications, which can be fully compliant with emerging standards being developed by SAE J2954 for EV wireless charging.

WiTricity’s wireless EV charging technology is a critical part of the mobility ecosystem, as electric and autonomous vehicles are the centerpiece of next-generation transportation globally.

Honda R&D will be exhibiting in booth #12021. For further information or to set up a press meeting, email witricity@v2comms.com.
