Drivers want EVs. What’s holding them back from purchasing one?

In a recent survey, Accenture found that 47% of drivers are convinced that the future belongs to EVs and 57% of drivers will have adopted an EV within the next 10 years. In fact, only 10% say they will never purchase an electric vehicle.

Percentages are just numbers, but they tell an interesting story. For instance, in China, 65% of drivers surveyed said they believe the future belongs to electric cars while only 37% of German drivers feel the same way. In the UK, the government is committed to its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. Will drivers buy electric vehicles or used petrol vehicles?

Charging convenience is one of the biggest concerns for those considering an EV as their next vehicle. According to the survey, 70% of drivers worldwide expect to be able to charge their car whenever it’s parked, whether at home or in public spaces like supermarkets. The driving range is also a big discussion point, with 81% of drivers worldwide ranking battery size and driving range as one of the most critical factors when purchasing an EV.

This is one of the many reasons why automakers, fleets, and government agencies are looking at wireless charging. It answers the public’s need to charge whenever the vehicle is parked. Simply pull over the charging pad in a parking lot or curbside and start charging. Whether for five minutes to pop into a store or five hours for dinner and a movie. Fleets love the idea of charging vehicles throughout the day when loading, unloading, or cleaning a vehicle. Not only does frequent charging extend a vehicle’s range but it also lessens the need for larger batteries, resulting in reduced battery production emissions.
