Smart Safety Systems

  • Foreign Object Detection (FOD) Before charging begins, the system scans for any misplaced metal objects—like coins or tools—that could interfere with power transfer. If something is detected, charging automatically pauses before heat can build up. It’s a proactive safeguard that keeps the process worry-free.
  • Living Object Detection (LOD) Safety extends to people and pets too. The system can detect movement beneath the vehicle during charging and instantly stop power if someone—or something—enters the area. Charging resumes only once the space is clear, ensuring complete peace of mind.
  • Position Detection (PD) Precision alignment technology helps guide the vehicle into the optimal charging position. Whether the driver parks manually or uses an assist feature, this ensures the best possible efficiency and reliability every time.

Shielded for Safety and Compatibility

Inside the receiver, advanced magnetic shielding keeps the wireless power focused where it belongs—between the charging pad and the vehicle. This prevents interference with other vehicle systems or nearby electronics, maintaining both safety and performance without compromise.

The power electronics that provide resistance and loss are present in both systems.

  • Power Conversion: Both plug-in and wireless chargers convert AC power from the grid into DC power suitable for the battery. This involves similar components, including Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuits, inverters, and rectifiers, which manage voltage and current safely and efficiently.
  • Galvanic Isolation: Safety is a priority in both systems. Conductive chargers achieve isolation using an on-board isolation transformer in the vehicle, while wireless chargers achieve isolation through the air gap between the ground pad and the vehicle receiver. This prevents direct electrical contact with the grid while maintaining efficient power transfer.
  • Optimized Design: Wireless charging systems are engineered to reduce losses in the magnetic coupling and control electronics. With proper alignment between the transmitter and receiver, efficiency remains high and comparable to conventional plug-in charging, while offering the added convenience and safety of a contact-free connection.

The complete system

WiTricity designs, builds, and manufactures all of system components to meet the demanding needs of the automotive ecosystem. WiTricity systems can be cloud-connected for web-based services by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or LTE modem. WiTricity provides web services including a user-friendly mobile app for drivers, a hosted asset and performance monitoring portal for fleet operators, and OCPP-compliant connection to web-based services offered by OEMs, charge point operators, and utilities.
